DVDDecrypt Slows, Stops, Retries to no Avail

Post by Hareoic » Wed Aug 20, 2008 1:05 pm

So I'm trying to rip the episodes from volume two of When They Cry, and for some reason DVDDecrypter starts off with about 1 meg of files transferred before slowing to .1x ripping speed, then it reaches zero kb/s and retries. And retries again. And again. And again. Finally, several failed attempts later I get something that says I/O Error and I don't know what to make of it.

This is annoying, especially because the last DVD didn't give me any trouble. If it makes any difference, it told me when I started up for this particular DVD that 10 areas were marked as suspect. Dunno what to make of that.

Somebody please help me out here.

The dvd is probably scratched so its unreadable.

I thought so too, but I'm able to play it without any problems. I just can't rip anything off of it.

Cleaned it and it still doesn't work.

Well actually I managed to rip from some part of the disc, but it came out distorted and caused errors.

that sucks, you might want to try returning the DVD in exchange for a new one.

How does the top of the disc look? There are more layers of protection on the bottom side than on the labeled side, so dings on the top can sometimes be a lot worse than scratches or smudges on the bottom.

No scratches on top, and I don't think I can return it (bought it at a convention).

Try using another program to create an iso of the dvd (like isobuster). If the fault really lies within a few scratches or smudges on the disk, it should be pretty clear if another program can't do the trick. If you can create an iso using this method, all you'll need to do is mount the iso on a fake disk drive (using daemon toos). You can then proceed to decrypting it w/ dvd decrypter.

Also, if you haven't done so already, see if you can rip the dvd on another computer. I've encountered experiences where someone else's dvd drive was better at reading past a few scratches/smudges on the disk than my own.

Also Pledge works wonders for filling in tiny scratches on DVDs. Just buff it in with a paper towel and make sure it's dry before you try again.
