  • Comments: I started working on this AMV back around the time when Re:Zero first started airing (and ended up only using episodes 1, 2 and 15, even though there is much more in the series now). I had edited the first 35 seconds, and laid out some clips at the end (the walking scenes, matching up with the sound effects in the song). But, as I had recently had my first kid, I just lost the time for making AMVs, and this video sat on my hard drive for nearly 7 years. Well, now that kid is almost 7 (and his little brother almost 4), so I finally got back into making AMVs and managed to finish it (with more AMVs on the horizon!!).

The concept of this AMV is pretty simple, a lot of the visuals match the song/lyrics, and I think the action fits particularly well. This song is from a divisive point in Dream Theater's career that tends to get a bad rap. But I still like it, even if the album it's from is a bit hard to get through (at least in one sitting).

You don't need to have seen the anime to get the concept, but if you have seen the Anime, you might wonder how we got to episode 15 from an AMV primarily focused on the first two episodes. But as the gimmick of Re:Zero (revealed in episode 1, not a spoiler) is that the main character respawns every time he dies, I figured I could take some creative liberties and show him dying in one of the most brutal ways (which makes for a bleak and jarring ending) as well as using clips that match perfectly with the sound effects. Sure, we aren't introduced to the characters of Rem and Ram in the AMV, (and I just barely introduce Emelia) but think the descent into madness Subaru starts to go through in that episode fits with the pacing in the song. I start the AMV by showing Subaru trying to fight back against the "shadow" that seems to haunt him and kill him at every turn, and then I show that death surrounds him and that there's no hope.
