  • Profile: I've always been an animation fan, but disappointed in its stigmatized incarnations. I thought I'd get into the industry to change that, and discovered anime while in (not through) animation school. At the time, US industries had not caught on to the growing movement. Gundam Wing ran uncut on Adult Swim, but anime fandom was still pretty niche. The school disapproved of the direction I took my work, and I disapproved of theirs (which was strictly 3D CGI). I decided to keep my art independent.

    I saw my first AMV while I was working at Animate in LA. As a highly visual person with a normal human sensitivity to harmony, I'd always thought that nothing topped an image sequence put to music. Tiny Toons music television proved that, and movie trailers mercilessly trumping their full-length counterparts constantly reaffirm it. I knew immediately that I wanted to do it.

    I've been composing amv's in my head ever since, but it took nearly a decade for me to find the time to make it a reality. My interest in anime has evolved from rabid n00b to veteran connoisseur, but my enthusiasm for amv's remains unchanged. I find them a great inspiration for all my creative pursuits. :)

    Why Naked Knight Productions?

    When I was driving home from work one day I turned on the radio and heard one line, entirely out of context. "The white knight is talking backwards." And I really liked it. At the time I was oblivious to the Alice and Wonderland reference. The line became a metaphor to me about fantasy versus reality. Fantasy presents the image of what we wish were true but reality tends to fall short of it. We think the world should make sense... that a white knight should come riding to our rescue when things are unfair. But the world isn't perfect. And while we shouldn't abandon our ideals, it might help us avoid disappointment if we learn to accept it on its own merits.

    Yeah. I was having a hard time reconciling to reality from my college dream. xD

    My path has taken new and interesting detours, but that line remains significant to me. Too long for a name, I started thinking of alternatives with the same idea. I struck on the thought that the opposite of an armored knight is a naked one - a wholly unprotected protector. The world is not perfect, but its spirit never fails. We may be unarmed, but that doesn't stop us from aspiring to knighthood.
